Senior CMT Technician

Department: Construction Materials Testing

Summary

The Senior CMT Technician is a highly specialized technician requiring little or no supervision. This technician is certified in three or more disciplines, and mentors other CMT Technicians. These disciplines include but are not limited to the American Concrete Institute (ACI), International Code Council (ICC), the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET), and a state Department of Transportation entity (such as LaDOTD, MDOT, or TxDOT). The Senior CMT Technician has a minimum of ten years’ experience in construction engineering technology or an equivalent. The Senior CMT Technician must demonstrate supervisory skills.

This CMT Technician inspects materials and observes activities associated with construction of streets, bridges, buildings, levees, etc., to ensure the procedures and materials comply with plans and specifications by performing the following duties.

The Senior CMT Technician works under the direction of the CMT Operations Supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned including working in our drilling or laboratory department, or working for Eustis Engineering’s other offices.

The Senior CMT Technician should be of high moral character, reputable, and conduct his affairs above reproach. He/she:

  • must have the ability to perform field inspection and laboratory tests to a high degree of proficiency in more than one area of technology, such as soils, concrete, piling, steel, coatings, non-destructive testing, etc.;
  • should qualify as an expert in one of those disciplines;
  • must perform duties of various assignments and complete complex reports with a minimum of supervision and assistance.

Other duties may include the following.

  • Measures distances to verify accuracy of dimensions of structural installations and layouts.
  • Verifies levels, alignment, and elevation of installations.
  • Observes work in progress to ensure that procedures followed, and materials used, conform to the project’s specifications.
  • Prepares samples of unapproved materials for laboratory testing.
  • Examines workmanship of finished installations for conformity with the plans and specifications.
  • Discusses deviations from specified construction procedures to ensure compliance with regulations governing construction.
  • Records quantities of materials received or used during specified periods.
  • Maintains a daily log of construction and inspection activities.
  • Prepares sketches of construction activities for inclusion in daily reports.
  • Uses appropriate personal protective equipment which may include hard hat, safety vest, safety shoes, face shield/covering.
  • Maintains a valid driver’s license and drives a motor vehicle while collecting samples, performing field tests, and conducting inspections.
  • Communicates orally and in writing with supervisor and staff members.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The Senior CMT Technician mentors CMT Technician I, II, and III personnel.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

The Senior CMT Technician must have, as a minimum, a high school diploma or general education degree (GED). In addition, he/she must have satisfactorily completed one or more of the following.

  • At least two semesters of college level training.
  • Attendance of technical seminars or short courses where more than a certificate of attendance has been awarded.
  • Completion of training where certification, in one or more specific disciplines of construction technology, is awarded.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Agile Frameworks’ MetaField® Project Management Project Management software; Internet Explorer or other similar internet software Internet software; Microsoft Office Excel and Microsoft Word software.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

The Senior CMT Technician must be certified in more than one accredited industrial organization including ACI, AWS, CWI, NICET, ICC, LaDOTD, MDOT, TxDOT. The Senior CMT Technician must also maintain his/her TWIC credential.

Acknowledgement

As an employee of Eustis Engineering, the Senior CMT Technician may be subjected to random drug and alcohol screening as part of our alcohol and drug abuse testing program.
